Too Stressed to Be Your Best

Whoever said that it was easy being your own boss clearly lied. On the surface it may seem great. You make your own hours, only accountable to yourself and after all, you are doing what you love. Every Empirelista knows all too well that being the boss comes at a cost. Your to-do list is never ending, the end of the year deadlines are quickly approaching, juggling numerous tasks, balancing budgets and not to mention you still have holiday shopping to complete for the ones that you love. You are simply too stressed to be your best.

As we commonly tell our patients and, very frequently ourselves, stress is inevitable. But, what makes us successful is how we deal with the stress that we encounter. So, before the end of the year comes to a close and you start your 3, 6 and 12 month goals for 2016, may we offer 5 ways to make stress work for you.

1. Recognize Your Limitations: As women and as our own boss, we commonly use the phrase “I’ll just make it happen”. We have a way of making 30 hours out of a 24 hour day. Bu,t this can be exhausting in the long run. Recognize what you are capable of doing in the allotted time and stay firm to those limits. If any additional tasks come your way, just say “no”. Realize the power of “no”. And believe us the world will not come to screeching stop if you cannot do one task imposed upon you. Which brings us to our next point

2. Outsource: The biggest lesson that we have learned as entrepreneurs is the art of delegation and outsourcing. Why take 5 hours to complete a task that someone, with less on their plate, can complete in 2? And sometimes that may come at a small financial cost. But recognize that your time has financial value too.

3.Get Organized: We once read an article entitled ‘Things that Successful People Do’ and one of the items mentioned in this article was making a to-do list first thing in the morning. Making a to-do list will help you plan and aid in realizing the flow of your day. Sometimes it can even reveal when you have over-committed yourself in a way that you may not have realized earlier. We challenge you to not only make a to-do list but add where and when to your tasks. Numerous studies have shown that deciding in advance when and where you will complete a task (e.g., “If it is 12pm, then I will check and respond to emails”) can increase the chances of actually completing the task.

4. Reduce Decision Making: Even President Obama, a man who knows a little bit about stress, stated in a Vanity Fair interview that he utilizes this strategy.

“You need to remove from your life the day-to day problems that absorb most people for meaningful parts of their day… You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make… You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia.”

5. Protect Me Time: A moment for yourself may result in hours of productivity. Schedule time in your schedule to do something of interest and fun for yourself. Write it in your planner in ink and protect that time.

Empirelistas don’t be too stressed to be at your best! Replenish and re-energize that overworked boss within. Utilize these strategies to make stress work for you. You may find that the better version of your inner boss will shine through!
