July Empirelista Playlist

As an entrepreneur, being independent is the depth and breadth that solidifies us into our niche. We must learn to stand on our own two feet. We must make the tough decisions regarding our businesses and lifestyle. Above all, we must remain confident and self-assured. The 8 songs below speak to entrepreneurial independence.  Enjoy.

  1. So What – Pink

Pink is known for her edgy material and overall “Girl Power” vibe she brings to all of her strength-laden songs. In So What, she talks about being ready to live her life after having a tough time in a former relationship. This song is empowering and sends the message of, “even when it’s not all right, it’s alright.”

Favorite Line:

“I’m still a rock star….I got my rock moves….”

  1. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

Another oldie but goodie, this song is a classic; a true confidence builder. This song is perfect for those that need to be reminded that through trials and tribulations, they are still capable of living because they have themselves and they are enough.

Favorite Line:

“Oh no, not I…I will survive/As long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive…”

  1. Independent Women – Destiny’s Child

Truly one of the most iconic songs of the century. Independent Women is a song that literally epitomizes independence, womanhood, and being courageous and brave in your journey.

Favorite Line:

“Tell me what you think about this, do as I want, as I wanna live…I worked hard and sacrificed to get what I get, baby it aint easy to be independent”

  1. Ain’t Nobody’s Business – Billie Holiday

I will admit- this song had me a bit on the fence because she mentions willfully staying in a relationship where she is a battered woman, and principally, I cannot get behind it.  However, the overall, “mind your business/I make my own decisions” message is universal in this song.

Favorite Line:

“There aint nothing I can do or nothing I can say, that folks don’t criticize me, but I am going to do just as I want to anyway….”

  1. Electric Lady – Janelle Monáe

This song is perfect for empowerment and strength. It reminds women to be themselves and that they control their destiny. Electric Lady is fun and encouraging.

Favorite Line:

“We the kind of girls who ain’t afraid to get down / Electric ladies go on and scream out loud.

  1. Survivor – Destiny’s Child

Another great song that epitomizes independence and strength after a storm, Survivor . This song wonderfully showcases how important it is to cut ties if necessary, yet remain strong, empowered, and prayerful during your journey to independence.

Favorite Line:

“I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up. I’m not gon’ stop. I’m gon work harder. I’m a survivor. I’m gonna  make it. I will survive. Keep on surviving!”

  1. Who Run The World (Girls) – Beyonce

Beyonce is filling up this playlist, but that is because many of her songs are bangers that captivate and perfectly align with everything Empirelistas are about.  In Who Run The World (Girls), this edgy song hits hard on the part of empowerment and strength.

Favorite Line:

“Who Run The World? Girls!”

  1. Respect – Aretha Franklin

Another iconic song, R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Aretha brings it in this song. She talks on requiring respect in her relationships.  This applies universally, in my opinion, because as an entrepreneur, sometimes it can be challenging to get people to give you the respect you deserve.

Favorite Line:

“…All I’m asking…is for a little respect!
