January is BIG for Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs) as five out of the nine sororities and fraternities were founded throughout the first month of the year.
For those who may not know, the nine historic organizations joined together to form the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Since the organizations’ formation, the sororities and fraternities have altogether played a huge role in Black and American history.
A little background:
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) is currently composed of nine (9) International Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions. This week is special because it highlights sisterhood and service in such an amazing way. Being that I’m a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, I couldn’t let this week go by without highlighting NPHC’s sororities and the awesome women of those organizations who just so happen to be entrepreneurs as well.
But first let me tell you why it puts the cherry on top being a Sorority woman AND an entrepreneur.
You are instilled with amazing values.
As a member of a historically Black Greek-Letter sorority, each one of us are taught the principles of which our organizations’ founders held near and dear. It most definitely crosses over to our personal and professional lives where we apply values such as tenacity, class, faith, integrity and more throughout our day-to-day lives.
Speaking on my behalf, I learned so much throughout the years of my membership and became a better woman because of it.
Whenever I feel like throwing in the towel, I remember when I wanted something SO much and nothing could hold me back from it. I am then reminded I’m capable of anything I set my mind to.
You have mentors.
Mentorship as an entrepreneurial woman is INVALUABLE. When you can learn from a woman who is doing it and doing it well, it makes your experience so much better. I’m so grateful for the women I’ve had the opportunity to learn under whether it be professional, personal or spiritual.
In Sororities, we take mentorship seriously. It’s how we cultivate and grow our organizations.
The fact that it’s part of our traditions has always made me so proud to be a part of my Sorority.
You are have access to an incredible network.
It is truly remarkable to be a Sorority woman and entrepreneur. We have the keys to a HUGE network of powerful, successful women. Entrepreneurs, politicians, school administrators, entertainers…. you name them, we got them!
This plays such a role when it comes to collaboration and partnerships.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that only Greek women are able to connect easily, anyone can! It just makes it so sweet when you can connect and collaborate with fellow SisterGreeks on a level outside of the “Greek World”.
You have sisterhood.
Of course this is the top reason! It’s what all of our organizations are founded on. Within our organizations we have cheerleaders, mentors, friends and more.
All NPHC organizations take pride in life-long membership, something that I’ll never take for granted.
I’ve been blessed with sisters all around the world, of all ages and ethnicities, who I’m able to call on in a time of need and they won’t even bat an eyelash. That to me is priceless.
