#DoItForTheGram: Instagram’s App Overhaul… Yay or Nay?

In a society where Botox parties are how people network and mingle, it should come as no surprise when our favorite apps get a little facelift, too. But in this case, Instagram went from Betty White-vintage to RiRi-bright and the reviews are pouring in!

Before we dissect the difference in appearance, let’s take a gander behind the scenes to see why it happened in the first place.

Through a cute video and short blog post, Instagram explained it perfectly: they wanted to evolve “simply.”  With “simpler” being the operative word used throughout their explanation, the team made it clear that they have decided to take a minimalist approach to the apps’ appearance.

As a creative stan, I can tell you minimalism is the unapologetic design trend of the year. While we can thank Instagram’s creative team for developing and executing this new concept, they would like to thank us for the inspiration:

“The Instagram community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more… Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become.Thank you for giving this community its life and color. You make Instagram a place to discover the wonder in the world.”

Now, what’s different? Everything.

The icon is a vibrant-gradient combination of everyone’s favorite Skittles colors; while the interface is a calm white with black as the accent color for the font and navigation pane icons – but of course, the heart is still white and it still shows up red. Some may say it looks too plain, but in theory, that was the point.

Instagram wants our images, videos, and overall posts to stand out. The concept is for the content bring life to the app, instead of the app bringing life to it. The looks of the app are upgraded but the quality and functionality remains the same.

I posted a message about the change last night on my feed and woke up to a few comments and then surfed the Ms. Google for a few more – well, all in all, it seems that the masses feel this was a good move and now an even better look.

So to the team over at Instagram, all I have to say is – great job folks! Great job.
