Trailblazing Trendsetters in Black Music

June is African American Music Appreciation Month, and before the month comes to a close we must recognize the fashion in black music! For years our talented singers, songwriters, producers and composers have shown us more than just their musical talent; they’ve shared with us their impeccable sense of fashion over the years and their trendsetting ways.

The princess of music, Rihanna, has always been a trendsetter. From the moment she stepped on the music scene with Pon de Replay, she captured our attention with her musical chops and her fashion know-how. Her best look, in my book, has to be the 2015 Met Gala ensemble. She wowed us all with her out-of-this-world gown and we all broke our necks trying to catch a glimpse. This look is a major moment in her trailblazing fashion path.

Singer and songwriter John Legend can make any woman swoon with his heartfelt lyrics and suave voice; throw in his flawless sense of style and you’ve got the perfect man. His classic look will never go out of style and his willingness to take risks is what sets him apart. Whether a colored suit jacket or patterned tie, John Legend is the man to beat not only in music, but also fashion.

Queen Bey herself definitely knows how to set a trend. Whether it’s serving us all Lemonade or selling us Red Lobster, Beyoncé is definitely the queen of trendsetting. The illusion dress has become a staple piece in the world of fashion. Mrs. Knowles-Carter made the look her own at the 2015 Met Gala. From her high ponytail to her perfect fit of the ensemble, she owned the red carpet and reminded us all that she comes to serve, and serve she does.

Black music and fashion go hand-in-hand. So as we celebrate Black music this month, don’t forget to celebrate all of the things inspired by it as well. Who you are your favorite artist making fashionable waves? Comment below!
