In a month that celebrates motherhood, womanhood and educational completion what better way to combine the latter two and show true value and celebrate black excellence?
The radiant law school graduates above, alongside their school dean, proves that black excellence is both attainable and stunning. Over the last few weeks I have seen photo after photo from various graduations, which include a group of students perpetuating positivity, which emphasizing the importance of black lives.
More specifically, Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, was accepted into every school she applied including all 8 Ivy League schools!
Can’t forget the Gates Millennium Scholars of Indiana University School of Education who received their PhDs together.
With all this greatness that surrounds us, a recent Howard University graduate stands out not only for me but also the Nation’s President, Barack Obama. He shouted out both her and her mother during his commencement speech his commencement at the university earlier this month.
That young woman is Ciearra Jefferson and she’s also a Bill Gates Scholarship recipient. But she turned down Harvard among other ivy league schools and accepted the privilege, as she states it, to attend a Historically Black College & University (HBCU). She’s also the first in her family to go to college and did so while financially supporting both her mom and sister.
Cierra got serious about her education at an early age and committed herself to success. For that, I am totally crushing on her, her mother and the #BlackGirlMagic dripping from them both! They stand for hope! My smile and warmth towards Cierra will remain strong, as she has discovered her purpose in life is to be a ‘change agent’ as she puts it. She’s dedicated her educational efforts and life’s work to helping those behind her; her community and the generation to come. She chasing greatness in order to bring it back to undeserved areas. Cierra boasts that she’s leaving Howard ready and able to achieve her goals, go after what she desires, while never settling for complacency or giving up. Learn all you can about this beautiful soul, Ciearra Jefferson, and what she has accomplished and what the future holds especially for her.
With each new story of excellence that has been reached with beauty, style and grace I smile knowing that future will be better. From the youngest in Pre-K to the educationally seasoned PhD, we salute, support and will continue to encourage you all!
#BlackExcellence is in full bloom and I cannot wait for what will come next.
