“I want to do something splendid. Something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead… I think I shall write books.” – Louisa May Alcott
The title of “author” is something many people are adding to their resume these days. It’s a surreal feeling to have a piece of you documented forever that you can hold, touch, read and share. Books are great collateral to help position you as an influencer and industry leader as well. Not to mention, it’s one of the number one passive income generators (don’t sleep!) However, most people also don’t know what it takes to produce and publish a book.
Cue Ardre Orie.
In the dictionary, next to the word “renaissance woman” should be Ardre’s picture. A lady of many hats (entrepreneur, advocate, playwright, author, film director…), Ardre has added to the packed hat rack the title of book publisher.
We got a chance to chat with this super busy business woman to discuss her publishing company, 13th & Joan, and her upcoming projects.
Empire Life: When did you establish 13th & Joan?
Ardre Orie: I established 13th & Joan after self-publishing my books Consciously Beautiful: I AM Enough and A Heroine in Heels. I had learned so much about the self-publishing industry. I didn’t want for others to have to search so hard for the most cost effective ways to publish a book. The traditional book deals are scarce but there are no limits on who can become an author and it was important for me to let the world know.
EL: Who are your primary clients?
AO: Our clients range from celebrities and tv personalities to musicians and makeup artists who want to package their work to reach new audiences or simply tell their side of the story. And then of course, there are the everyday heroes who want to share their stories. They are all important and I get excited to help them bring the concepts and emotions in their hearts to books that the world can hold in their hands.
EL: What is different about 13th & Joan from other publishing companies?
AO: 13th & Joan is focused on ensuring that the author received a quality product but also the development of their author platform. I learned from experience that completing the book is only half the battle. The real works begins in the promotion of the book and making the rest of the world pay attention to the author.
EL: Is there a meaning for the company name 13th & Joan?
AO: I was raised by two women who greatly impacted who I am today. My grandmother who was born on Friday, October 13th and my mother whose name on her birth certificate was Joan. I believe that I am an intersection of these two ladies so I thought that naming this company in their honor would be a great way to channel the energy that they have poured into me over the years.
EL: What is your favorite part of the publishing process?
AO: I have two. One thing that I thoroughly enjoy is ghost writing. I have so many clients that come to me who simply don’t have time to write or they are unable to put their story into words. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to take the stories that are in the hearts of my clients and place them into words in a book that they can hold in their hand and share with the world.
My second favorite part of the publishing process is the moment when I receive a phone call from a client in tears from witnessing their finished project for the first time. So many people never imagine that they can become authors and I am simply showing them how.
EL: Are you writing any new books in the future?
AO: My next book is entitled: The Art of Storytelling: 25 Reasons You Should Pen A Book Now and Real Strategies to Get It Done. I will release The Art of Storytelling in September of 2016. It’s an easy read that features a myriad of reasons why people should pen a book in their lifetime. This book will help readers to recognize the story inside of their souls and begin writing it. It even includes a few worksheets and writing prompts to get the writing energy flowing.
I could go on for days about the benefits of becoming an author and I want to share this experience with others.
EL: What are your upcoming plans for 13th & Joan?
AO: We have officially launched our #IWILLTELLMYSTORY social media campaign. This campaign showcases our existing authors as well as encourages others to consider becoming authors and tell their stories. This is of great importance to me because so many people that I come into contact with have a story and they just need the right tools to allow their voices to be heard.
With all of the recent events that have transpired in our country, we need now more than ever for our voices to be heard and to leave a legacy of who we were and our contributions to the world that they might never be erased.
Another event that I will be launching is Books & Bordeaux. This is a simple combination of three of the things that I love most: people, books and wine. The event will feature local authors in various cities and allow attendees to socialize and engage in new literature. I love laid back moments to genuinely connect with people who share a love for good stories. I am also planning “The Art of Storytelling Tour” in 2017.
