I’ve always had a connection with Africa. It is possible that my group of friends whose heritage ranged from Ghanaian, Liberian, South African to Ethiopian and Nigerian. I guess you could say it was natural for me to develop a deep affinity for the continent. A few years back the stars aligned and I jumped at an opportunity to live and work in Morocco. Though Moroccans have their own unique deep-rooted traditions and style, there was still an aesthetic to Moroccan fashion that drew me in. Again I befriended an awesome group who called the sub-Saharan area of Africa their home. It was there with those awesome men and women that I grew to love African print fabric.
2011 was the year that the ankara trend watch began. H&M had several skirts and tops that imitated one of Africa’s most treasured style secrets. The colorfully decorated prints are versatile and easily paired with mixed prints. That’s the beauty of wearing ankara. Although the beautifully adorned patterns are not new to the style scene, it’s refreshing to see that years after the trend surfaced, it’s still turning heads.
